These citrusy cocktails made with either gin or vodka, are best made in the winter using seasonal grapefruits from California or Florida.

  • 1-1/2 grapefruits (8 ounces)
  • 2 tablespoons sea salt
  • 8 ounces vodka or gin
  • 2 ounces sweet vermouth
  • 2 ounces Cointreau

  1. Before juicing the grapefruits, remove 4 long strips of peel with a vegetable peeler and set aside.
  2. Place some salt on a small plate, lightly moisten the rims of 4 cocktail glasses with some grapefruit juice and then dip the rims into the salt to coat.
  3. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and then pour in the vodka, vermouth, Cointreau and grapefruit juice. Shake vigorously to combine for 35 seconds and then strain into the prepared cocktail glasses. Garnish the cocktails with the reserved peels and serve immediately.
