When rimming a cocktail glass, make sure to use fruit juice to dampen the rim and not water because it will make the sugar dissolve instead of adhere to the glass.


  • 1/4 teaspoon caster sugar
  • 2 ounces grapefruit juice
  • 2 ounces gin
  • 3/4 ounce dry vermouth
  • dash orange bitters
  • lemon twist to garnish
  • sugar to rim glass


  1. Lightly dampen the rim of a cocktail glass with grapefruit juice and then dip the rim into a small plate with sugar to coat.
  2. Place the caster sugar and the grapefruit juice into a cocktail shaker and stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  3. Put the rest of the ingredients, except for the garnish, into the shaker, fill with ice and then vigorously shake the mixture for 35 seconds.
  4. Strain the mixture into the prepared glass, garnish with the lemon twist and serve immediately.
