This beef stew recipe is a family favorite passed down through generations.

Ingredients

  • 3 carrots, cut in 1-inch pieces
  • 3 stalks celery, cut in 1-inch pieces
  • 2 potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 1/2 pounds lean stew meat cut in 1-inch pieces
  • 1 can diced tomatoes, undrained (14 oz.)
  • 1 can reduced-sodium beef broth (14 oz.)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold water

Directions

  1. Layer carrots, celery, potatoes, onions, garlic, bay leaf, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, basil, pepper, beef, tomatoes with juice and broth in your crock pot. Cover and cook on low 8 to 9 hours.
  2. Remove beef and vegetables to large serving bowl.
  3. Set aside and keep warm.
  4. Remove and discard bay leaf.
  5. Replace cover on crock pot and turn on high.
  6. Mix flour and water in small bowl until smooth.
  7. Add 1/2 cup cooking liquid and mix well.
  8. Stir flour mixture into crock pot.
  9. Cover and cook until thickened.
  10. Pour sauce over meat and vegetables.
