Corn bread is a tasty and more rustic alternative to serving classic bread rolls at the dinner table. Enjoy it as is or lightly toasted under the broiler with butter until golden brown.


  • 1-1/2 cups stone-ground cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1-1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 egg whites


  1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees and grease a square 8x8x2-inch pan with cooking spray.
  2. Place all of the ingredients into a bowl and beat well for 1 minute, the transfer the batter to the prepared pan.
  3. Bake the cornbread in the oven for 22-24 minutes or until the top turns light brown. Enjoy warm.
