Klaben Brot is German Christmas Bread. 

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 eggs
  • 4 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup candied pineapple/cherries or mixed candied fruit

Directions

  1. Scald milk, stir in sugar, salt and shortening. Cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in warm water and teaspoon sugar. Add milk, eggs and half the flour; beat until smooth. Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Add nuts and fruit.
  2. On floured board knead until glossy. Place in greased bowl and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour. Cut in half and put in 2 greased loaf pans; let rise again until they reach top of pan.
  3. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 45 minutes.
