Classic Hungarian Beef Goulash is a symphony of intense flavors.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut in 1 1/2 inch chunks
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 teaspoons ground marjoram
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
- 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
- 6 large onions, sliced
- 1, 6 ounce can tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 each green and red peppers, slivered for garnish
Directions
- In a Dutch oven over medium-high heat in hot shortening, cook marjoram, caraway seeds and lemon peel for 2 minutes; add onions; cook, stirring occasionally, until tender. Stir in 2 cups water, stew meat and remaining ingredients except peppers.
- Simmer, covered, 1 1/2 hours or until fork tender, stirring occasionally. Pour into a serving dish; garnish with red and green pepper slivers.
