Classic Hungarian Beef Goulash is a symphony of intense flavors.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef stew meat, cut in 1 1/2 inch chunks
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 teaspoons ground marjoram
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
  • 6 large onions, sliced
  • 1, 6 ounce can tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 each green and red peppers, slivered for garnish

Directions

  1. In a Dutch oven over medium-high heat in hot shortening, cook marjoram, caraway seeds and lemon peel for 2 minutes; add onions; cook, stirring occasionally, until tender. Stir in 2 cups water, stew meat and remaining ingredients except peppers.
  2. Simmer, covered, 1 1/2 hours or until fork tender, stirring occasionally. Pour into a serving dish; garnish with red and green pepper slivers.
