Hoe Cakes

Old fashioned hoe cake recipes.


  • 2 cups yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 tablespoons bacon drippings
  • 1 cup milk


  1. Mix together the dry ingredients, stir in 1 tablespoons of the bacon drippings and milk. (Add more milk if needed.) Keep the batter stiff to form small, flat cakes.
  2. Heat the remaining bacon drippings in the skillet, and fry the cakes on medium low heat until browned on both sides. Turn only once.
