Easy Homemade Chocolate Cake can be frosted or eaten plain.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1, 1 ounce square unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups cake flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Directions

  1. Cream shortening and sugar; add egg and vanilla; beat well. Add chocolate and mix thoroughly. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Bake in waxed paper lined 6 1/2 by 10 1/2 inch cake pan at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.
  2. Cool completely and frost as desired.
