Bring on the butter!  Double Loaf Homemade Bread makes 2 loaves of warm white bread. 

Ingredients

  • 1 package yeast
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 5 1/2 - 6 cups flour

Directions

  1. Dissolve yeast in water. Scald milk, add sugar, salt and shortening. Beat. Add 1 cup cold water, until lukewarm. Add yeast and water. Add 1/2 of flour; beat. Add remaining flour. Knead until smooth and satiny.
  2. Shape in ball and place in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise until double in size, about 2 hours. Knead and shape into 2 balls. Cover. Let stand 15 minutes. Place in 2 greased loaf pans; let double in size, about 2 hours.
  3. Bake at 400 degrees F for 50 minutes.
