Bread and Butter Pickles are worth the effort.

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon cucumbers
  • 8 large onions
  • 1/2 cup coarse salt
  • 5 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon tumeric
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard seed
  • 2 teaspoons dry celery seed
  • 5 cups vinegar

Directions

  1. Slice onions and cucumbers. Sprinkle with coarse salt and let set for 3 hours. Drain and rinse off salt.
  2. Bring to boil the remaining ingredients. Add cucumbers and heat thoroughly but don't let boil. Put in canning jars and seal.
