Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 5 cups tart apples, peeled and cubed
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • PIE CRUST INGREDIENTS:
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups shortening
  • 6 tablespoons ice water
  • 1 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 egg

Directions

  1. To make the crust, cream together the flour, salt and shortening. In a separate bowl combine the egg, vinegar, and water. Combine the two mixtures and chill.
  2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Combine all the dry ingredients. Divide in half and sprinkle 1 half over the pie crust.
  4. Sprinkle the remaining mixture over the apples and dot with the butter. Let set for 20 minutes.
  5. Divide the crust dough in half. Roll out to 1/8 inch thick. Moisten the bottom half. Fill the bottom half with the apple mixture. Add the other half to the top and cut several slits in the top.
  6. Bake for 1 hour.
