Easy exercises

Almost all pregnant women should be doing some sort of prenatal exercise, but beyond the basics, there are some extra easy exercises you can look into that still offer great health benefits.

Workout

Kegels - The best pelvic exercises for women, and oh so easy. You can do these without even thinking about it.

Swimming - Swimming while pregnant is not for the faint of heart (but only when it comes to picking a pregnancy bathing suit!). Other than that, swimming is a perfect, relaxing, low-key, but still highly beneficial exercise for pregnant women. It works your arms, legs, and other muscles, plus you’ll feel so lightweight in the water (bliss).

Weight training - weights don’t sound easy, but I’m not talking about pumping major weights. You can reap huge benefits from a few simple weight lifting exercises (I’m talking minutes a day).

Prenatal yoga - Light, low-key, easy, and fun; yet still an awesome mama workout.

Dancing - Ah, dancing. If you can get your partner (or friends) to go dancing with you once a week, you’ll get to have some pregnancy fun and get your body moving. Just keep it safe. Pregnancy is not the time to test out new tricky salsa moves -- sorry.

Foot care

Out of sight is not out of mind for a mom-to-be and her feet. You may not be able to see your feet, but you can't ignore them. Pain and swelling are common complaints, but today's busy pregnant woman can't often put her feet up for a rest.

Foot

Several factors cause foot pain and swelling, including changes in your center of gravity, weight gain and hormones. The pregnancy hormones relaxin and progesterone, which relax ligaments for childbirth, also loosen foot and hip ligaments.

"One of the more common complaints among pregnant women is plantar fasciitis, inflammation of the plantar fascia, which is the large ligament that connects the heel to the ball of the foot," explains Dr Karen Agnich, DPM, a podiatrist in Woodridge, Illinois. Dr Agnich says, "Gain the recommended amount of weight to avoid foot stress and pressure. Extra weight can irritate the plantar fascia ligament." She also sees many women who need a larger shoe size permanently after their babies arrive.

In the know

Between 12 and 16 weeks, as you move into the second trimester, you will hopefully start to feel that you do not need to sleep as much as you did in early pregnancy. The fatigue will probably reappear late in pregnancy, when you're coping with all the additional weight and demands of the baby rapidly growing inside you.


Who's in there?

Curious about the sex of the tiny tenant who's been subletting your uterus? You're not alone. Since the beginning of time, expectant parents have relied on a variety of old wives' tales to predict the sex of their baby. Here's the scoop on one of the five perennial favorites.

"If you're carrying your baby high, it's a girl. If you're carrying your baby low, it's a boy."

Many people still lend credence to a rather sexist bit of English folk wisdom that states that boys are carried down low and out front because they need greater independence, while girls are carried up high and across their mother's body because they need greater protection -- the origin of this particular sex prediction myth.
