Ideas and Inspiration

Author and physician Landrum Shettles says in his book, How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully Revised and Updated (Broadway, 10/06) that when trying for a boy, the father should not have an ejaculation for the three days before the "target date" a day or two before ovulation. If a girl is your goal, have intercourse every day after your period ends but stop three days before ovulation.

Did you know?

Most people would not choose the sex of their child if given the option, according to a new nationwide survey. The study is the first to examine the demand and preferences for sex selection among the US general population. Read more about this research here.

Fun stuff

Visit the Chinese conception gender chart to see how your age at conception could possibly determine your child's sex. The chart was supposedly discovered in a tomb and is rumored to be over seven centuries old. (The original is said to be on display at the Beijing Institute of Science in China.) How accurate is it? Reports vary -- so don't repaint the nursery based on the results -- but it's still fun to see what is predicted for you!

Your body

Biologists at Brown University and the University of California Berkeley have discovered that two proteins team up to turn on an assortment of ovarian genes critical to the production of healthy eggs. This finding, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, sheds important light on the biochemical processes underpinning fertility. In the know

If you're having problems getting pregnant, try charting your cycles. This is most effective if you chart your basal body temperature (see day 2) and cervical mucus for at least three consecutive months. Such charting can help you achieve pregnancy, and can also help diagnose possible fertility problems like anovulation (lack of ovulation), ineffective ovaries, lack of certain hormones and structural problems.
