One of our readers asked: "I'm 41 and expecting a baby. Since I'm an older mom, should I take my age into account when evaluating my fitness routine?"

Fitness instructor Lisa Stone, ACE, answered: "Your fitness program prior to your pregnancy is more important than your age when it comes to your workout. If you were physically active before becoming pregnant, then you should be fine to continue working out throughout your pregnancy, barring any complications and, of course, with the approval of your healthcare provider.

"After your first trimester, you may need to begin modifying your workouts as your growing belly and breasts affect your center of gravity and mobility. Once you hit your third trimester, you may find that you need to reduce the frequency and intensity of your workouts through the remainder of your pregnancy. During your entire pregnancy, though, be sure to really tune into your body's signals as to when you've had enough exercise. If something causes pain or discomfort, don't do it!"

What is... ?

Pre-term labor

The usual length of a pregnancy is 38 to 40 weeks after the first day of the last menstrual period. Premature or pre-term labor is defined as labor occurring after 20 weeks, and before 37 completed weeks, of pregnancy. Although there is no firm data, estimates on the incidence of pre-term delivery suggest that 6 percent to 10 percent of all births in the United States occur between the 20th and the 37th week of pregnancy.

According to Robert K Creasy, MD, chairman of the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at the University of Texas Science Center at Houston, prematurity accounts for over 50 percent of the neurologically handicapped children in this country and is the greatest single cause of newborn illness and death. By the time your baby gets potty trained, he or she will have gone through about 10,000 diapers (more for boys than for girls, and way, way more for twins), so the faster and more efficiently you learn to get the job done, the less time you'll spend doing it.
