pregnancy Pregnancy & work

A reader writes: "I have just moved from another state and after three long weeks, I have finally found a good job. Coincidentally, on the same day I was hired, I also found out that I am pregnant. It has been two weeks since then, and I am in agony just thinking how to tell my boss. Will the news affect my job?"

Parenting expert and author Ann Douglas answers: While the situation you find yourself in is awkward, I've got some good news for you: most employers who have just hired a worker who has just found out that she is pregnant take the high road with their new employee once they recover from the initial shock. The toughest part -- as you've gathered -- is mustering up your courage to break the news to your employer in the first place.

Random pregnancy annoyances

What other aches and pains might you experience that you haven't heard a lot about? How about pyogenic granulomas? Don't be alarmed if you happen to notice tiny nodules on your gums when you're brushing your teeth one morning. These nodules -- known as pyogenic granulomas (pregnancy tumors) are harmless, non-cancerous growths that can occur during pregnancy. They tend to disappear on their own after you give birth, but if they're causing you a lot of grief, you might want to ask your doctor to remove them in the meantime.

Advice and support

According to the March of Dimes, it is normal for your uterus to contract at times during pregnancy -- for instance, after walking up or down stairs, after sex or when you first lie down. However, it is not normal to have frequent uterine contractions before your baby is due.

Feeling belly

Contractions can occur without any other warning sign. Premature labor usually happens between weeks 20 and 37 of pregnancy. Therefore, during these weeks, it is important for you to feel your abdomen for contractions at least twice per day for half-hour intervals. (It is helpful to do this at the same time each day.)

Contractions are timed from the beginning of one contraction to the beginning of the next one, and they rarely last for more than one minute. Use our easy contraction timer to help count the seconds!

Faux fashion

"I used to think pregnancy would be the blackest chapter in my personal fashion history. But now I know that it was merely a dress rehearsal. After months of wearing maternity 'jeans' without a trace of denim paired with tops that resembled colorful pup tents, I vowed that I was going to be one hip mama once I delivered this baby.

"Although we're no longer in the 80s, I still have an indelible vision of what a suburban mom looks like. You've heard of the Valley Girl, well, let me introduce you to the Valley Mom. If there were a Valley Mom Barbie Doll, she'd be wearing black leggings topped by a long baggy T-shirt with colorful rhinestone cats emblazoned on the front. Keds sneakers are de rigeur. Her hair is short, frosted and permed and her favorite accessory is a fanny pack. Yet now that I actually am a mom, I should look so good. Welcome to my nightmare."
