Where does your pregnancy weight gain go? According to Registered dietician Martha Belury, PhD, it breaks down as little something like this:

  • Baby: 8 pounds
  • Increased fat: 2-8 pounds
  • Increased blood supply: 4 pounds
  • Increased breast tissue: 3 pounds
  • Amniotic fluid: 2 pounds
  • Increased muscle (including uterus): 2 pounds
  • Placenta: 1 pound

Total: 22 to 28 pounds

Keep an eye out for urinary tract infections. They can develop without warning, seemingly without rhyme or reason. Or they can follow a definite pattern -- mimicking a menstrual cycle, occurring after sex -- or, for some women, every time they get a gynecological exam.

The problem is UTIs -- short for urinary tract infections, a problem affecting upwards off 26 million women every year, many between the ages of 18 and 35.

Find out how to recognize the warning signs of UTIs -- and what you can do about them.

Having a a baby shower? Avoid inviting the same people to more than one shower (although some people will want to attend several). Generally, it is best to invite by groups, for example, co-workers, church, etc.

The mothers and grandmothers of the mom and dad should be invited to all of the showers, but it is up to them to decide which ones they will attend.

Traditionally, the father-to-be did not go to showers, but did arrive at the end of the party to say hello to everyone, help load the gifts into the car and to take his wife home. Nowadays, the dad can be invited to a baby shower, and couples showers (with both men and women) are becoming more and more popular!

blown from the hand of God.
Lucky the woman who knows the pangs of birth,
for she has held a star."

A doula - now?

You know about birth doulas, but did you know that there was another kind of doula? A doula for you to have during pregnancy.

An antepartum doula provides informational, emotional, physical, and practical support to women with high-risk pregnancies as well as teen mothers, single women, rape victims who are pregnant, women with severe morning sickness or any other mom who needs extra support during pregnancy.

Mom and doula

The doula provides her client with books, articles and research papers to help her make better-informed choices. Emotional support is vital for a woman on bedrest, and talking over concerns is another way a doula can help. Feeling pampered can really lift your spirits. Some doulas will do your hair, give you a foot or hand massage, rent you some videos and pop some popcorn, or even make a belly cast for you (with the permission of your caregiver). Read more here!
