Homemade healthy dog food recipe

Whip Up Healthy Eats For Your Fave Pooch

If you look at the list of ingredients on some popular dog food brands, you'll be surprised to see just how many preservatives, dyes and additives are in your furry friend's kibble -- and the really good, healthy brands can cost a lot, some retailing for more than $50 for just one bag! Instead of spending an arm and a leg each week, make your own with this easy starter recipe.

This homemade dog food is a breeze and uses only fresh ingredients you love to eat as well. However, it's very important to talk with your veterinarian before you change your dog's food to ensure the variety you make has all the essential nutrients and vitamins your pup needs for healthy growth. This food is a great starter recipe you can build on later, a great once-a-week treat or a perfect addition to your pet's kibble to get them to eat.

Recipe adapted from All Recipes

Serves five

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups brown or enriched white rice, cooked
  • 2 cups water
  • 1-1/2 cups steamed chicken, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1-1/2 tablespoons egg powder
  • 1 cup cooked vegetables (broccoli, carrots, potatoes, green beans), finely chopped
Optional:
  • 1/2 tablespoon kelp powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon carob powder

Directions:

  1. Mix rice, chicken, rosemary, egg powder and vegetables in a large mixing bowl. Gradually add water, 1/2 cup at a time, until mixture is moist, but not sitting in water. You want it to be wet enough so it's easy for your pet to digest.
  2. Serve immediately or keep refrigerated for 3-4 days.

Hi Danielle! I feed this to my dogs once a week and they are healthy as a horse! I'd definitely consult with your vet if you are really concerned but I've never had an issue!

I heard that you shouldn't feed your dog rice (or potatoes) because all they are is fillers that are hard for your dog to digest... is this true? I'd love to try this recipe but after hearing that they should not eat rice I'm scared to try it....

Hey Penny! I'd give him as much of this as you would a normal serving of his food if you are using this a replacement for wet or store bought. If you are using it as a supplement, only give him about 1/4 - 1/3 a cup a day, especially if he's a finiky eater. Hey Laura! I'm not sure why it calls for Rosemary but I know it adds a good flavor. I've been feeding this to my pup once every week or so and he's perfectly healthy! I'd say if you didn't want to use it, you could omit it for a spice like cinnamon or something.

Hi, this recipe sounds good, I have a fussy 7 lb. Chih/Poodle mix. How much should he get? I could add Tuna to this as well? Thanks, Penny

I'm looking to start making my own dog food and then at some point cat food. Why is is that every dog food has rosemary in it? From what I have read there is a direct correlation with rosemary causing seizures?? Any help is appreciated.

I was giving my dog carrot sticks as treats because I assumed that it was more organic. Who knows what is in the store bought dog treats? After telling my vet of my proud accomplishment she informed me that carrots in fact have MORE sugar and fat then store bought dog treats. Go figure.

Yes it is all good but make sure to check the list of what not to feed your dog. I have 10 dogs and 5 cats and I make their food for them daily. On the ASPCA website there are a list of foods not to feed animals and Broccoli is one of them. Broccoli causes intestinal problems and diarrhea. I have been feeding my animals fresh foods for more then 15 years of trial and error. Todays so called dog food is not only costly it is unsafe. It scares me to see so many recalls and news programs about how many dogs and cats die from kidney failure. 5 of my 10 dogs are close to 20 years old and no one could guess their age.

I am obsessed with this recipe! Cannot wait to try it on my little pup. I find it so important to select dog foods without fillers or that are over processed. I notice a difference when I don't eat junk- so I am definitely not going to feed junk to my pet! Thanks for this great healthy and simple recipe!
