I Love You But, Achoo!

You wouldn’t disown a family member over allergies, but many families forego their puppy parenting dreams to keep the family allergy free. Not all dog breeds trigger watery eyes and sneezes, however: Some shed less, have less dander or don’t have any fur at all! We found the top 10 best -- and cutest -- dog breeds for a family with an allergy problem.

6. Shih Tzu

Despite those long, silky locks, this breed sheds very lightly. Although they need a lot of grooming, they are affectionate, kind and easygoing. But be wary: Shih tzus tend to become jealous of babies and toddlers, so protect your other little loved ones from their insecurity.

I talked to our allergists nurse today and asked her if there was such a thing as a hypoallergenic dog and she said, "I wish there was." We had to find a new home for our golden retriever because our son is allergic to dogs and were considering a shih tzu, but now we will probably go with a dog that can be outside.

I am very allergic to dogs. I have a coton de tulear (bichon family) and have no problems. My brother had a shih tzu which I was allergic to, although not as bad as a shedding dog. I was out today trying to help a loose dog get home and was reminded how dander free my coton is!

I have had allergic reactions to some of these dogs. You haven't mentioned the Maltese. We had one and it didn't affect our allergies at all. They don't shed so they need to be trimmed.

I can see that shih tzu and the schnauzer is on the top list. I have a shih tzu and my friend have an small schnauzer and I'm very allergic to both of them. Although i take my allergy pill i am very allergic to these two breeds.. so i think it's weird that they are on the top list. I know everyone reacts to dogs differently..

True that those who have a dog allergy are not only allergic to dander but to dog saliva its self. The closest breed i have found to being sneeze free is the Coton de Tulear. This breed does not shed and does not have a dog smell. Many people with "doggie allergies" do perfectly with this rare dog breed.

We have 3/4 soft-coated wheaton terrier, 1/4 labrador retriever puppies which makes for sweet-tempered dogs with a wheaton type coat, less allergenic. The mom is a black "wheatador" half lab, half wheaton and a relative allergic to dogs is not bothered by her. Wayland, MA

I am looking at getting Labradoodle since I'm highly allergic. Was curious if anyone else has a Labradoodle and if so if they have allergies and/or allergic reactions to them? Thanks!

The Lhasa Apso is also a great, non-shedding breed. They resemble the Shih Tzu but don't have the pushed in snout. They are energetic and independent. Most who know them will say that they have a big dog spirit in a little dog body.

Glad to see a list of "hypo-allergenic" dogs to encourage people who thought they couldn't tolerate living with one to explore this wonderful possibility. BUT...I am sad to see that you have described the poodle as "prissy." Poodles are, in fact, extremely athletic animals... humorous, loyal, largely adventurous, highly trainable, as well as one of the two breeds always cited as the most intelligent. Prissy they are not. Of oourse, I can't speak for their owners!
