Great Dogs
Come Small

If you're thinking of getting a small dog because they're cute, cuddly and quiet, you probably should think again; what they lack in stature, they often make up for in arrogance. Sure, small dogs are cute, and some of them look cuddly, but not all small dog breeds have meek personalities. Like people, small dog breeds come with different personalities, so before you pick up your small, cute friend, it's a good idea to know exactly what you're getting.

Miniature Poodle3. Miniature Poodle

A sensitive breed, Miniature Poodles tend to be dedicated to a single person and are shy around strangers, at least initially. They do, however, get along with children, dogs, and other pets. The Poodle's body type is a reflection of their athletic roots. Truly, there are not many dogs that can carry their bodies as well as this dog. Cut your Poodle's coat in a variety of styles, including Puppy, Continental, English saddle, or Sporting clips.

Yorkshire terriers should be number one! I had my girl for 14 wonderful years. When i had cancer and had to have chemo and radiation i was in bed sick alot and my sugar knew it so she would lay right next to me so that if i moved or got up she would be right up and with me. Amazing dog she was!

Haha, I'm laughing over the comment that Poms are "mellow and gentle." Those dogs are nutcases!

We have five full-blooded Shih Tzu. They were the most loving, warm and understanding animal I have ever had and I have had several over the years. They seemed to understand every word that you would say to them. They went every where we did and very, very well mannered and protective. They all lived to be 17 to 18 years old. The vet said that was very unusual. The Shih Tzu is a very loving and wonderful pet. I miss them very much, like one of my kids.

I agree, King Charles Spaniels are the best, my little one is a 5 year old Blenhiem bitch and she is the cutest, silliest, soppiest little thing. Amazing with children, doesn't bark, hasn't even ever growled at anyone or anything part from the washing line. She loves cats too, even if they're hissing and spitting, she is still wagging her tail and wanting to play. Maybe she is just a bit dumb, but I love her all the same :-)

Have to say I am on my 5th mini schnauzer. Have had them since 1972 and love them with all of my heart. They have all been females and all have been spayed. My last few have always slept with me. My little girl now has never met a stranger and loves everyone. Have to say socialization is the key. She is black and it must be that not very many people have ever seen a black schnauzer since they will ask me if she is a scottie? She is my soul mate. Most definitely she is a schnauzer.

I'm fond of Papillons - despite their coat, they don't shed much (they've only the one layer) and don't need a great deal of grooming, they don't need a tonne of exercise, and they're wonderfully chipper and friendly (not that any of the dogs noted here aren't!). Someone else mentioned the Cavalier King Charles spaniel - another beautiful small dog with the most soulful eyes I've ever seen :)

i dont want a chawawa now cos they would nipe at my kids :(

I want one of each lol. I have a chi/mini-doxie and a full chi. I love them to death. But the full chi barks and act furious to every dog, and he hates cats, one scratched him and he never got over it. Once you are past getting barked at they want to get on your lap. But then they look at me with guilty in their eyes so funny.

I don't think the yorkie should be number one .. That's totally off . Poodles are much smarter and sweeter than yorkies . I got a poodle and he was potty trained in two day and he was trained everything in the first week I got him! Poodles are sooo amazing

One of the best dogs we ever had and still have (7yrs. old) is a cross between a Chihuahua and a Jack Russell Terrier. We got tricked because they said he was a full blooded Chihauhau, come to find out he was an accident, but the trick was on them...he is such a great dog in everyway.

We have had big dogs (pit/german shephard mix), pomeranians, poodles, and chihuahuas. They are all awesome, with their own individual personalities, all have been loyal as could be, great watch dogs, and incredibly loving lap dogs...yes, even the big ones thought our lap is where they belonged! You give any dog a lot of love and affection, excellent food, and take care of them as they are your family member...and any breed can be incredible family dogs...our pit/gs mix dogs were just as awesome as the little breeds! It's all in how they are loved and taken care of, no doubt about it and regardless of what anyone says, including those people who are against certain breeds, which are people who have never raised those breeds they complain about. We love all dogs, mutts to purebreds, they are all a gift to humans and love us like no other! Amen to treating them as family!! :-)

I have 2 malteses they are so adorable, and extremely smart and obedient and humble I talk to them like I would talk to a child. And they listen and obey, I have absolutely no problem with them at all. They both are God sent!

I have two chihuahua's one full blooded the other mixed and both get along great with children and other animals. they are not always noicey only bark when someone is out side door, they play well with the four cats we have. love to spend most of the time on my lap under a blanket.

Lynne Zarecki January 03, 2012 | 3:10 PM

Could you please tell me what breed of dog is on your advertisement? The little one the cutie pie. I am looking for a dog like that. Puppy. Thank You, Lynne Zarecki

I’m not sure what you have against “The Five”. I mean, four of the five panel members are on the right. The only creep is Bob Beckel. I admit, his creepiness makes the show a bit harder to handle. But Greg Gutfeld makes up for it! I LOVE him!! Beckel will probably have a stroke or a heart attack on the show one day and they can just shove him off the stage and continue on.

This is to Rusti, I have found that when teaching a new puppy to get used to brushing teeth, hair and nail trimming, the best thing is to GO SLOW. I have an 8 yr old Toy Poodle that hates to have her nails trimmed so I only do one paw at a time each day, until it's accomplished. The same with brushing hair, be very gentle and actually I use a people produt called WEN replenishing spray that helps comb through tangles. The "messy booty" stuff as I call it, can be helped by keeping the hair in that area trimmed with long haired dogs. No matter what, if you are gentle and give treats after, the dogs will behave much better. The same with teeth brushing, I use a spin brush on my cat even. She'll be 12 yrs old this May and lost a few teeth about 5 yrs ago. From that point on, after having her teeth professionally cleaned, I started using the spin brush and only until SHE let me know she'd had enough. Plus I brush her hair afterward (she's a Persian) that she loves, so all-in-all it is a pleasant experience. That's really the key. No yelling, or frustration. If you have to struggle, put it off until a time when you have more patience and they will learn to love whatever you're doing (or at least let you do it).
