Great Dogs
Come Small

If you're thinking of getting a small dog because they're cute, cuddly and quiet, you probably should think again; what they lack in stature, they often make up for in arrogance. Sure, small dogs are cute, and some of them look cuddly, but not all small dog breeds have meek personalities. Like people, small dog breeds come with different personalities, so before you pick up your small, cute friend, it's a good idea to know exactly what you're getting.

Yorkshire Terrier1. Yorkshire Terrier

It isn't a coincidence the Yorkshire Terrier has been in the American Kennel Club's top 10 most registered dogs ten years running (coming in second place the past two years). The Yorkie, as it is lovingly referred to, is bold, curious, and always ready for an adventure. The Yorkie's coat, which is silky, long, and straight, may be cut in various styles and comes a clear shade of tan with a dark steel blue hue. A beautiful lapdog and wonderful pet addition.

Just need to add that we have a bichon/shih tzu and he is the most adorable kind dog. He is 13 months old now - only barks if there is a bad energy, loves to meet new people, very friendly with other dogs when we are out walking, very smart re learning new things - his only downfall is he can be stubborn, which if you are in a hurry can be frustrating but his patience and love are incredible. He knows how to fit in at a work place - ie he is not the focus and is very grateful when he does get attention. If you want a dog as a true companion this dog is where it's at.

How about the name "Tulip"!? I called my little purebred female Schnauzer "Tulip" and it takes most people by surprise, but as soon as they think about it,they love it and never forget her name!

I'm looking at getting a Maltese all my friends who have it say it's the most adorable thing in the world. And it's so cute and cuddly it's also very friendly. But you might not want to pamper it to much.

Me and ma partner have just got a wee yorkie terrier and we are amazed how cute and good they are already. We have to young children and its really friendly and playful with them both. Would recommend wee yorkie to anyone with kids and a nice family.

Our shih tzu is the most loving animal we have ever had. He loves little children and is a terrific watch dog

My Australian terrier is the easiest dog ever. She does not shed, seldom barks, loves everyone. She likes to play but is content to sit in my lap, too.. I loved my Jack Russell for her great personality, but the Australian terrier is easier.

This is for Penny who wants a small dog. I got my chipom (Chihuahua/pomeranian from Calican Rescue. They bring small dogs over from California. She is the most wonderful pet I have ever had. Try them and I am sure you will be happy. They have a website.

We are currently looking for a tea cup poodle or Chihuahua, maybe even a mix of the two. He would like to size up to a golden doodle. But Bucky rules the roost and he is not willing to share the power. So for now it's just looking, lol. Min Pins are high energy and easily excitable, trust me when I say ear plugs, lol. But wouldn't trade him for the world.

Penny January 14, 2014 | 5:23 PM

Surprised that mini pins didn't make the cut. Very yappy, but needs little exercise, so for people that love to walk for exercise, this may not me the dog for you. They are suppcesstable to heat stroke very easy, but they keep you entertained all the time. Our male red can't lay beside you, they have to be on you, ha.

Our little Tibetan Terrier was the sweetest and smartest dog we ever owned. They can be stubborn, we enrolled him in an obedience class and he simply refused to obey any of the required commands. The trainer was beside herself, then at graduation day all of the dogs in class had to be tested...unbelievable but he was the only dog out of a class of 12 to perform 100% of the commands. Sadly he recently passed away and we are lost without his company

I have a mini Dachshund. Just the sweetest boy I've ever known. All dog. Not barky. He is a long hair. so soft! Just keep them lean and don't let them jump off beds or couches and their backs will be fine.

I have a mix a shih zhu and a Maltese cutest little thing in the world!

I have a maltese who is 2.5 years old. She is my 84 yo mothers best frends, with her 24 hours a day. She is very lovable and protective of my mother. However; she gets alone with everyone even our 2 outside cats that come in from time to time to visit. I suggest a maltese for a lap dog, companionship and loyatly. Excellent dog and easy to potty train. The only negative thing I can say is that they are very people oriented, do not leave them alone for long periods of time. I hope whatever you decided you will enjoy yours as much as we do ours.
