10 Dogs For Kids

While Lassie and Lady and the Tramp are fun to watch, they're probably not the best way to choose a dog for your kid. So how do you go about picking a pup from among all the different breeds out there? A good rule of thumb is to choose a breed by its disposition, temperament, size, and energy level--all of which should suit your family's lifestyle. We present 10 dogs that are especially suitable for kids.

PetMD shares the best family-friendly dog breeds:

Bull DogBull Dog

The Bull Dog has a sturdy build that is perfect for kids who like to roughhouse. The Bull Dog is comfortable living in large houses, as well as apartments. However, it won't win any awards for "most energetic dog." A docile, friendly, and loyal dog, it gets along well with other pets and dogs, too.

Spaniels make great family pets! We currently own a Springer. They are medium sized, love to play and are soft mouthed so are disinclined to mouth whilst playing. Typically they have bags of energy in the park, but will happily laze around the house. Easily trained, our was housebroken by 12 weeks and although they sometimes have a reputation for being mad, when properly exercised and cared for are incredibly loyal pets. They are also protective of their family, and will let you know if there is a stranger at the door.

I love how any article about dogs becomes a debate about pitt bulls.

Thinking of an Akbash who is as gentle of a dog I have ever been around. We don't know him at all and was a stray at the shelter. He was very docile and passive upon first meeting. They are livestock protectos and I have my 13 month old grandson upon occasion over. The one downfall that I see is he is a huge breed, but wanted to know if anyone had any experience or know of anyone that has had this breed around babies, thanks Candy

Pit bull for families with kids? Pit bulls are the exception, rather than the rule. This just flushes the whole article down the john.

We have 3 springer spaniels. Definitely wouldnt recommend any type of spaniel around kids. On the other hand I have a baby of a Great Dane he is the most gentle sweet loving animal in this world. He even loves cuddling with kittens! (:

She stole this from Cesar Milan And changed Iist a little. His list actually has the lab listed which is right to all rightful people who have ever been around one. He does not suggest any small breeds for families with children. Yes, your personal experience may be great with the small breed. I grew up with poodles but I have to say that not every one of them was "kid friendly". I have tried my hand at a pug and a zu with kids. Unfortunately it did not work out because they were nippy. Fortunately, I had willing family to take them. To each its own. I prefer a Great Dane and has been the BEST family dog ever. It is of course a compiled list of a matter of opinion. That is why you Googled this in the first place right?

If you actually do your research Bull Terriers are highly NOT recommended for familys with small children, they can be very territorial and may snap or attack a small child.

I think a Labrodoodle, a mix with a labrador and a poodle. If you have allergies then there perfectbecause like the poodle they don't shed. Or you could get a Chibull, a mix of a bulldog and chiuhuhauh (chiuhuhauh is the male)and those are great family pets, they do shed I know because I have 1. I also have a Labrodoodle. For more info look in at google to see the Labrodoodle, they don't have Chibulls I checked.

I think alot of people judge e breed by the one they have. For instance one of my best friends loves Pitts and he did have two of the sweetest dogs you ever saw, but I've been around lots of Pitts and about 90 percent of them were not family dogs by any stretch of the imagination, very aggressive by nature! Same with boxers, you might find a kind one ,but aggressive as a rule. Beagles are sweet dogs, have lots of friends that hunt with them never seen a viscous one yet,but are not really a go anywhere you go kind of dog. Labradors and Goldens are impossible to beat, they are so loyal and smart and will literally give their lives to protect your kids! The other day three dogs started into our yard, a boxer, a basset hound , and a mixed breed about 70 lbs and our little 55 lb golden retriever female met them about 25 feet before they could reach our kids and war insued she wasn't about to let them get near her kids and she gave new meaning to laying it all on the line! My kids came and got me and I chased the dogs away , but a few days later the dogs came back and little Georgia stopped them in their tracks again, luckily this time I was in the yard and stopped it before it started but the point is she'll protect her kids forever every day if she has to even with insurmountable odds because she them more than she does herself! With all of their wonderful traits I found out that their courage is immeasurable as well, so if you want a companion who wants to do anything you want whenever you want to do it and love and protect as long as they live, get s Goldie or a Labrador I promise you will fall in love too!

Amaya,Menaha and Devansh Malik May 03, 2013 | 4:53 AM

Boston terriers are great with kids,.... so why arent they on the list?

Will April 27, 2013 | 12:24 AM

I think that it is absurd that you even say that bull terriers have a large pain threshold. Do your children not understand the basic act of being gentle? I do not know what kind of family you live in, one that does not understand how to control their children enough not to injure a pet.

Pit bulls were never called the nanny dog. That is a myth/lie used as propaganda. Look at credible sources, not pi bull advocacy orgs, to find this out.
