If you prefer the company of cats to humans the perfect job vacancy has come up in Manchester — but you'd better hurry because a lot of people want to join Manchester Cat Café's "nannying" team.
It's only a matter of weeks before the city's first ever cat café, run by sisters Ellie and Sarah Close, opens its doors to the public. Located in the trendy Northern Quarter area, it promises to be a "calm retreat from the day to day hustle and bustle of a busy city centre."
"The idea came from my visit to Maison De Moggy last year in Edinburgh," Ellie told SheKnows. "When I came home I was surprised to find out there was not one closer to me. So Sarah and I have decided to open one to ensure everyone can experience how lovely a cat café is."
On hand to give cuddles while you're waiting for your coffee will be various feline friends, including Gus, Georgie, Kiera and Ygritte.
The cat nannies would be expected to look after the "general well-being of the Manchester Cat family" as well as encourage customers to interact with the cats. Many of us would jump at the chance to spend our working days cuddling cats for nothing but it's true — these are paid positions.
The hourly rate for meeting the needs of the cats, including feeding, grooming, cleaning litter trays and bedding and playing with them, is £7.50 to £8.
Shifts will be during opening hours (9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week) and also when the café is closed, meaning there's ample opportunity for bonding with your new cat family without having to top up customers' coffees.
Unsurprisingly, Ellie and Sarah have been "overwhelmed" with applications.
"We cannot keep up with the rate that they are coming in," admitted Ellie. "It hasn't even been live 48 hours and 3,000 people have downloaded the application form."
"There will be more than one cat nanny hired," she revealed. "Most likely one full time member and several part time. The decision on who gets hired will most likely come down to their experience and personality. They have to have great customers [sic] skills and a genuine knowledge and love for cats. Cat welfare is our main priority at the café so getting the correct staff in is vital."
As well as cat nannies, they are recruiting for a café manager, assistant manager, front of house staff and baristas.
