Do You Believe In UFOs?
UFO Festival, Science Saturdays and 3-D exhibits help make this Art Center exciting for all ages.
Roswell Museum and Art Center, Roswell
We'll never know for certain if UFOs really landed at Roswell. However, we do know that the town's Museum and Art Center offers more than the average trip through art history. Rather, this incredible culture center has sensational exhibitions, a planetarium, a wealth of educational resources and programs and enough collections to keep everyone from the toddler to the teenager excited, entertained and eager to learn.
What began as a result of the Great Depression through the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Federal Art Project (FAP) along with a handful of other organizations will certainly survive this Great Recession. The Roswell Museum and Art Center is a 50,000-square-foot facility that houses 12 galleries, an art education center and the crown jewel — a planetarium.
When planning a trip to southern New Mexico and this center, first check the event schedule. There are numerous family festivals throughout the year, free viewings of international films for older children and adults and opening receptions for exhibits. If your family can make only one trip, try to plan around the UFO Festival. There is even a pet contest as part of this celebration. Please note the festival is usually during the first week of July.
Planetariums are not that common, so the Robert H. Goddard Planetarium is a popular draw for children of all ages. Insider's tip — the planetarium also hosts a laser show during the UFO Festival that should not be missed. Science Saturdays are offered once a month and are free to families. There is a presentation and corresponding science project to help excite children about stars, planets, comets, black holes and more.
Explore both the permanent and visiting collections at Roswell. Much of the art is 3-D which really helps engage the little ones and helps them appreciate others' creations. The museum store is packed with CDs along with Mexican, Indian and Cowboy art. And here's the best part — this museum is free! That's right, free all year long.
