SheKnows Exclusive: Alison Sweeney

You might know her as the host of NBC's The Biggest Loser or Sami Brady from Days of Our Lives, but actress Alison Sweeney's most important role is that of mom.

The busy celebrity mom spoke to SheKnows about her family as well as her involvement in the new Little Miss Coppertone contest.

Little Miss Coppertone

Merck, the makers of Coppertone, recently launched a nationwide search via Facebook for a little girl who embodies the persona of their beloved icon — Little Miss Coppertone. Sweeney will help select the finalists for the Facebook photo contest. America will then vote on the final winner, who will be awarded a seven-day, six-night family vacation and will be featured in a Coppertone print ad in 2013.

"I'm super excited to be a part of launching this contest because I have been a Coppertone fan for my whole life," says Sweeney. "Sunscreen is an important part of being a mom — keeping your kids protected. And since Coppertone is a trusted brand, this is such a fun contest to be part of. Everyone knows Coppertone with the iconic image of the little dog and the girl in her swimsuit. The goal of the contest is to find Little Miss Coppertone 2012. The contest is on the Coppertone Facebook page and we are encouraging parents to upload pictures of their little girls, ages 2-7, from all walks of life who represent the spirit of summer.

"I am taking part in the judging of the contest. Coppertone is giving away a dream vacation to the winning family. Plus they are also donating $1 to Feeding America for every entry received during the month of May, up to $25,000."

Staying active

Sweeney stresses the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle and spending time outdoors with your kids.

"We love the outdoors — from practicing baseball with my son to going hiking as a family to hanging out at the beach," Sweeney says. "For spring break, we went to Mexico as a family. It sometimes requires a little more creativity to get in a workout while you are with your kids. On vacation, my husband and I traded turns — one of us would watch the kids building sand castles while the other one took a run on the beach.

You can stay active anywhere with some creativity... while your kids are playing in the pool, you can be doing kicking sprints on the side or you can swim laps."

Being a mom

When asked about the best thing about motherhood, Sweeney responded: "I honestly don't know where to begin. This is going to sound sappy but my absolutely favorite thing is seeing my kids smile." Aww!

Like all of us, Sweeney sometimes struggles with finding a balance between work and family time, but she puts in the extra effort to give her children her undivided attention. "Balance is so important for me when with my family. I have to put my smartphone down and really do things together, giving my kids my full attention. Also, I do my best to break up my time. When I'm at work, I'm at work but when I'm home, that's family time. I organize my schedule so that I can make dinner for my kids and spend time with them in the evenings."

Shopping

While all of us love to get dressed up and decked out from time to time, the reality of being a mom is that you need a casual-chic wardrobe that works for an on-the-go lifestyle. So, where does Sweeney like to shop?

"I love J.Crew right now. It's so my style — relaxed and casual."

Finding "me time"

"Me time" is an essential part of every mom's life. It provides the opportunity to recharge your batteries, relax and de-stress.

"It's important to give yourself some me time — time to relax and chill out. My husband jokes that happy mom is a happy family," Sweeney laughs. "I love to read and I'm an avid reader. Just 15 minutes at the end of the night is enough to give me that break I need."

Sweeney also offers another secret to carving out a little me time — running.

"Being active and taking care of yourself is so important," Sweeney says. "I trained and ran in the L.A. Marathon this year. All that outdoor training was very rewarding to me. It provided an amazing workout of course, but also gave me that me time that we were speaking of since training requires my concentration and really helps me clear my mind. The best trick I can tell you about working out outdoors is to try the Coopertone Sport Pro Series. Their sunscreens have moisturizers to keep your skin hydrated. Plus it allows you to sweat and work out, but it doesn't sweat off."
