More Business of Being Born is the follow-up to Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein's original docu-series, The Business of Being Born. In November, SheKnows was fortunate enough to interview Ricki Lake, along with other celeb moms featured in the series, including Cindy Crawford, Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Christy Turlington Burns.
Lake's inspiration for The Business of Being Born
"we are not sick when we're pregnant„
Ricki Lake was changed for the better after her second birth experience. "The original reason we made The Business of Being Born was because I wanted other women to have access to the information that I didn't have the first time around," Lake told SheKnows. "I had to put my privacy (and vanity!) aside to include the video footage of my home birth in our first film."
"But I knew it was important for other women to see birth as a natural event. Most of our images of childbirth are women constrained to hospital beds and hooked up to a variety of different tubes and IVs," Lake continued. "But we are not sick when we're pregnant, and birthing women should not be treated like 'patients' if they are low risk and healthy. So I think my own experience was so enlightening and transformative on so many levels -- it seemed like I had a responsibility to share that with other women."
In 2007, Lake teamed up with Epstein and The Business of Being Born was, well, born! They followed that up with More Business of Being Born, which was released in November 2011.
