The Bond
Between Brothers

In his new movie Charlie St. Cloud, Zac Efron shows he is more than just a pretty face, but that he can play a character with real depth and raw emotion. “This is a movie about family and the strength of family,” he says. SheKnows chats with Zac and newcomer Charlie Tahan, who plays his little brother Sam, on everything from the bonds of brotherhood to ghosts -- and having Kim Basinger play your hot mom.

Did your moms see the movie?

Charlie: Yes, there were a couple of times we both cried!
Zac: My mom has not seen it yet. But she cries a lot in movies.
Charlie: My mom cried at the end of the Sponge Bob movie!

What scene was the most fun to film?

Charlie: The rain scene was so fun!
Zac: The rain scene was fun. I like the scene at the beginning of the move playing catch on the street, in front of the house. Something about that location was really beautiful. It brought me back to playing catch with my dad, which was my fondest memory. That is exactly what we do. It was real. Haven't' seen that in movies.

What is next for you, Charlie? Do you have a typical kid life?

Charlie: Mostly summer boy things. I live in a small town.
Zac: He is pretty standard. He doesn't have any mutant powers.

Any character you want to play in the future?

Charlie: I have done a lot of "sad boys that have died!" Would like to do a comedy.

Did you like this dramatic type of role, Zac?

Zac: It was fun. It was exactly what I asked for. It was something different. For the first time, it was a lot different than I was personally. Usually I do as scene and can't wait until they say cut and can go off and play pranks -- but then it is really easy to get back into a scene. For this, for the emotional stuff, you can't really have that down time in between. Some days I wasn't that fun to be around because I was trying to stay in that dark place. Sort of method [acting], but not really.

Thinking of your characters, what aspect of the characters you play is most like you?

Charlie: The way he said things. I didn't really change the voice or personality.
Zac:  At the beginning of the movie, Charlie didn't have the advantages that lot of the other kids did. He didn't grow up wealthy, but he's sort of playing the dad for his little brother and is raising him into the man he knows he can be. Teaching him the rules, [like if] you put your heart and soul into something and give it 110 percent, you can make it in this world. All of the hardship that we have dealt with so far is out the window. You can do whatever you want to do. I have always had this philosophy. My dad instilled that into me that I could do whatever I want to do and I really believed it. It was the most powerful thing for me growing me.

With all the ghosts in the movie - Do you believe? Especially filming the scenes in the cemetery. Did you get creeped out?

Zac: Yeah, I think so. When we were in the graveyard it wasn't that scary because lots of people were there.
Charlie: It wasn't the scary spooky scenes in the graveyard. It was mostly him seeing friends who were dead.
Zac: It was actually a lovely place. It was so nice. However one night it was 4 in the morning. Me and Amanda [Crew] were falling asleep and we were like, 'Let's go do something! Do you want to walk in the graveyard?' We left set and got lost in the graveyard and it was suddenly really scary! We couldn't see lights from the set. It was thick fog. Vancouver gets thick fog! So that was scary.

I never thought a graveyard was sexy before…but in the movie you made it work!

Zac: Thank you! (laughs)

You were honored with People Magazine's 50 Most Amazing Bodies. How did you get into shape?

Zac: You know, I follow the rules. Everyone knows them. I try to eat right every chance I get. Eat healthy and don't eat fast food. I enjoy training. I do it on my own. Sometimes for a movie you can squeeze in a trainer. It has always been a personal thing for me. I like to get outside and play sports and hike. I like adventure.

What was it like having Kim Basinger as your mother?

Zac: It was weird...she was too pretty. (laughs) At the same time, it was amazing. She was so warm and open and sharing. Every time we had scenes together, I couldn't wait to get out there. Between takes, I would sit and talk to her. She has this magnetic personality and you don't want to leave her alone. She is very cool.

How about Ray Liotta? I liked the scenes at the coffee table.

Zac: He is like the opposite… Just kidding. He is awesome! So funny and so smart. He knows everything to say that is cool. He has a swagger he doesn't even know he possesses which makes it so cool. He's never afraid to improv or go outside the script. Every scene he does he has a different approach to it. It is amazing what happens from one scene to the other. He is able to commit from so many different angles. I learned a lot from working with him.

Who do you guys want to work with in the future?

Charlie: Will Ferrell!
Zac: I like The Hangover this year. Those guys are amazing. Todd Phillips [director of The Hangover] would be fun to work with. All those guys. Tom Lennon was fun to work with and he is friends with Zac Galifianakis and he has told me many stories, so I know he would be fun to work with.

Charlie, as a young actor, what do you see yourself doing when you are Zac's age? Do you look for him as an example?

Charlie:  Yes, similar stuff. Not sure exactly what I will be doing later.

Zac, any advice for Charlie as a seasoned veteran?

Zac: I'm a seasoned veteran? (laughs) I think he has everything he needs. Just don't change. He knows what he is doing. He is already present. He is leaps and bounds form where I was when I started. Just stick to you guns, man.
