Mariah Carey reacts to Nick Cannon's new baby

When she's not writing, Claire Gillespie can most often be found wiping snotty noses, picking up Lego, taking photos of her cat or doing headstands.

Mariah Carey calls Nick Cannon about his baby-to-be

If Nick Cannon was worried about ex-wife Mariah Carey finding out that he's expecting a baby with ex-girlfriend Brittany Bell, he needn't have been.

More: According to science, mothers are unhappy

In an interview with Power 106 in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Cannon revealed that Carey actually contacted him when she heard the news.

"She came at me first about it, so it was actually easier," said Cannon. "I don't know how she heard about it, but she called me, and she was funny with it. She was like, 'Mm-hmm, I heard about you out here in these streets.'"

The America's Got Talent host, who is dad to 5-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan with Carey, confirmed that Bell was pregnant with his child in November. Cannon said his twins were super-excited to hear that they would be having a little brother or sister.

Cannon also suggested his baby with Bell was planned. "[It was] never an 'oops baby,'" he said. "I'm so calculated with my moves. I’ve always wanted five kids... Just because my marriage was over didn't mean I couldn't continue my family."

And Bell seemed to be the perfect choice for the mother of his next child. "I wanted to make sure it was someone who was solid, spiritual and had the same views," explained Cannon. "She's been in my life. Our families grew up in the same projects together in San Diego. So there's a lot of substance there."

It's not unusual to have a blended family nowadays — but it's certainly not always easy. Cannon could be one of the lucky ones, however — it sounds as if his ex-wife, kids and ex-girlfriend are all fully on board with the new baby.

Carey's reaction to Cannon's baby news shouldn't really come as much of a surprise. This couple is a great example of how to co-parent successfully after divorce. They don't let the fact that they're no longer together affect long-standing holiday traditions, and their mantra, "it's all about the kids" is really all any divorced parents need to remember. Even when Carey's engagement to ex-fiancé James Packer was announced, Cannon let the world know how happy he was for them both — and, true to form, managed to poke fun at himself by sharing a fan-created meme captioned "It's just a ring Nick."
