Jon Gosselin may not be the kind of parent you think he is

When she's not writing, Claire Gillespie can most often be found wiping snotty noses, picking up Lego, taking photos of her cat or doing headstands.

Just because Jon Gosselin doesn't see his kids doesn't mean he's a bad dad

Dad of eight Jon Gosselin has revealed everything about his child custody issues — and they're significant.

More: Before you judge the leash on my kid, hear me out

His relationship with ex-wife (and reality TV partner) Kate Gosselin is so bad that they have virtually no contact, despite sharing eight kids.

During an interview with Yahoo, the 39-year-old Jon & Kate Plus 8 star said that although he has a custody agreement that provides for weekly dinners and overnight stays every other weekend, he still has huge difficulties seeing his kids, because his ex will only let him see four of them at one time.

Gosselin said this is why he hasn't seen his 12-year-old son, Collin, in a year and a half. According to the former DJ, he hasn't seen Collin because "whoever comes through that gate or gets off that [school] bus" is who he gets — and Collin is homeschooled, "so he doesn't get off a bus."

Gosselin's biggest problem is money — or a lack of it. He says he can't afford to take his ex-wife back to court to reach an agreement that would allow him to see all of his children. Whatever you think of him — and most people have a pretty strong opinion — you can't deny that he's right about this. Whoever you are — reality TV star or regular parent — it's incredibly expensive to get lawyers involved and enter into lengthy child custody court proceedings.

It's easy to judge a parent who doesn't see much of his or her kids. People wonder why they're not "fighting" for their children and accuse them of not caring enough. But often that's not the case at all. You can love your kids more than anything, but if you can't afford to hire a lawyer and the other parent refuses to have any contact with you whatsoever, your options are limited.

Whatever you think of Jon Gosselin, remember that he's a dad who has no idea where his kids even are when they're not with him. In fact, he says he resorts to Twitter to get a clue on where they are by searching #KateGosselinSighting.
