Maison's the mom heard but not seen in a viral video that's already been seen more than a million times on YouTube. In the video, the mom of five surprises her transgender daughter with a box containing the hormones she'll need to kick-start her transition.
Grab some tissues, then take a look:
According to Maison's comments on the video, her daughter Corey had been waiting 2-1/2 years for a readiness letter to come through that would allow her to start on estrogen. She had no idea the pieces had finally fallen together the day her mom picked her up from school and sat her on the couch with a video camera trained on her.
As Maison said on YouTube, "Sorry I had to stop recording because we were both blubbering sobbing fools LOL. September 24th is a day I will remember for the rest of my life!"
Corey's pure and utter joy is the best part of this video, but her mom's pure love and utter support for her daughter are a very close second. When a child announces they're transgender, things in your life are about to change, but your love for your kid shouldn't. They're still them. And in a world where 59 percent of trans and gender-nonconforming kids are bullied at school and 41 percent attempt suicide, your love and support is more vital than ever before.
So what do you do if your kid comes to you and says they think they're transgender? You follow Erica Maison's lead. Because one day you could see that look on your kid's face and know that you put it there.
