Your worst family vacation stories ever

Based out of Dallas, Texas, Mary McCoy is a writer and social worker for disenfranchised women and children. She's a single mom, lover of Texas barbecue, and a die-hard fan of yoga

These vacation stories are enough to make you hole up all summer

Summer is the season of late nights, backyard grilling and memorable vacations.

And by memorable, we definitely mean terrible. It's miraculous that these families ever tried to vacation together again.

Lost and found

"My parents rented a vacation house for me, my husband and daughter a few years ago," said Stephanie R. "A few days after we returned home, I realized I left my vibrator at the rental. How did I discover that my device had gone missing? My mom let me know. The property manager gave her a call to pick up the lost and found item."

That escalated quickly

"I was 11 or 12 when we broke down in Alligator Alley while towing a boat," explained mother Maria M. "A young man pulled over to help us, and my grandfather pulled a gun out on him." Sounds tense, like every good family vacation.

A rookie mistake

Redditor Winpotch tells a story of a rookie mistake he made when he was vacationing as a teenager with his friend's family. "They had a really hot daughter, and I decided it would be a good idea to take a picture of her and send it to a friend," he said. "Well, it turns out that my flash was on. She looked straight at me and the only logical thing I could think to do was run. I ended up running into a screen door and ripping a huge hole in it." It also turns out that the rest of the vacation was really awkward.

A historical adventure

"We went to Ireland for two weeks when I was 15," said Redditor Macman07. "It was a trip with my aunt to check out our family history. We literally drove for eight to 10 hours each day to look at a grave. It was the worst experience of my life."

Attack of the raccoons

"My husband and I attempted camping with our two young sons," said mom Mandi A. They had heard that they needed to protect their food from animals, so they placed their cooler and groceries inside their locked tent. "We returned to the campsite from a hike, and our entire tent looked like it had been mauled. Utterly destroyed. Apparently raccoons aren't deterred by a tent."

A proud father

"My dad took us on vacation with him when he was working on some projects," said Redditor Karmabritchs. "We all piled in the car for two days. Our destination was a sewage treatment plant and to a dam he designed. We even have pictures of us standing on the dry lake bed before it was filled." Talk about a creative solution for Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Who knew there were two?

Finally, here's one of my own. My then-husband decided to book a babymoon for us. It was supposed to be a weekend trip to a cabin in Mount Olive, Arkansas. He booked it, and we hit the road. Well, there is apparently more than one Mount Olive in Arkansas. Our GPS took us to the one that was a full four hours away from our actual destination — but we cut the trip short, anyway, when we ended up having to tow our SUV out of a ditch because my ex was busy trying to read a map while driving.
