Premature baby fights for life after mom dies in tragic car crash

A tragic accident ended the life of a pregnant woman, but her baby survived — and now must fight for her life after she was delivered three months early.

Little Ellie Grace entered the world three months early after a tragic accident claimed the life of her mother. She faces a long road, but fortunately family reports that she's doing well. Her start in life was less than ideal, however.

Her mother, Monica Ramirez, had fought with her boyfriend on that fateful night. After fighting, they drove away in separate vehicles, and as they drove, they hit each other, and both ultimately crashed into a building. The man was treated and released, but the story for Ramirez was far more grim. She suffered a traumatic brain injury, and while doctors were able to save her baby, Ramirez died a few hours later.

A court had previously granted her an order of protection against the man after she filed a complaint that he had kicked, stomped and dragged her. While the investigation is still underway, it appears he may have run her off the road the night of her death. No charges have been filed as of yet.

My heart breaks for this family, and even more for this baby girl and her big brother, who both have to grow up without their mother. It sounds like there is a good family support system in place, so she will definitely know that she's loved fiercely. What a terrible event for this family to endure, but I'm so happy the baby survived the accident and has a chance at a good life.

The family has started a GoFundMe account to help with the costs of Ramirez's funeral and Ellie's medical bills.
