The best summer haircuts for the preteen crowd

Kids and tweens hairstyle ideas

From SheKnows Canada
Keep your kid cool and stylish this summer with a great haircut or style. From summer spikes for your son to pixie cuts for your daughter, here are a few hairstyle ideas your kids will love!
Cool summer hair
Spiky hair

For boys:

The modified buzz

No-fuss hair that's perfect for active summer days! What makes it different from a traditional buzz cut is that the top is longer than the sides and back.

  1. The sides and back should be cut using a #2 guard on the clipper, while the top should be trimmed with a #4.
  2. Blend together to form a seamless transition between the lengths.

Summer spikes

Longer than the modified buzz, this cut is clean and easy to do. Just rub in a firm-hold gel to get the spikes, and it's done!

  1. The back and just above the ears should be trimmed using a #4 guard on the clipper.
  2. Blend in the back of the top and sides, and trim the front 1 to 1-1/2 inches to allow the hair to be spiked easily. Finish with hair gel to set the spikes.

The natural mop top

Go with the flow is the motto of this haircut! There is no need for clippers with this do — just an easy cut that follows the natural flow of the hair.

  1. Have the stylist taper the back and up around the ears while leaving enough hair in front of the ears to blend in with the bangs.
  2. Keep the top and bangs long (to the brow), but texturize to create a wispy look. For more definition, finish with a texturizing product.

For girls:

Side braid do

A chin-length bob is always in style, but this is a perfect way to keep the hair off her face this summer. This style works well on longer hair too.

  1. Part hair on the side.
  2. Take a section of hair from one side of the part, and French-braid it toward the back of the head. Stop when it's past the ear, and fasten with a barrette or elastic. Leave the rest of the hair to fall naturally.
  3. Repeat on the opposite side.

Crowning glory

Long hair is a popular choice for females of all ages, and while this style is reminiscent of a grown-up hairdo, it's kept on a younger level with the addition of cute hair accessories.

  1. Pull a segment of hair from the front to the back of the head. Brush and back-comb it slightly, then twist. Fasten it with several small, pretty barrettes.
  2. Pull the rest of the hair into a high ponytail that sits on top of the head.

Pixie cut

When the summer heats up, a cool pixie cut can help a girl beat the heat and stay cute at the same time! A stylist can make a pixie or a longer, modified version work for almost any type of hair, and there are still options to change up the look.
  1. Pull the bangs off the forehead with tiny barrettes.
  2. Add a pretty headband.
  3. Add a texturizing product, and let any natural waves or curl shine through.
