Let's take a little journey together — a trip through the making of The LEGO® Movie!
The three building blocks in my toy box are The LEGO® Movie official teaser trailer, The LEGO® Movie: Behind the Bricks featurette and The LEGO® Movie official main trailer — all brought to you in stunning high-definition quality.
I'll tell you a little bit about each of them and give a shout-out to the talent involved in making the movie — but you'll have to go to the theater to experience the true wonder behind this film, including the big-name stars and the incredible 3-D.
These promotional videos are so much fun because they all deliver something new about the movie and what to expect when you get to the theater. To get into the right mindset, let's just say that I think everything is awesome!
I think the opening of the teaser is amazing. It brings to mind the Batman movie franchise right off the bat (hey, a Batman pun!), and it promises the assembling (again, love it!) of heroes. Then in walks Emmet, the ordinary LEGO® guy who gets mistaken for "The Special" Master Builder. It makes me feel like I could be a superhero, too.
Speaking of superheroes, it's exciting to see that Batman, Wonder Woman, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and a bunch of other little heroes are going to be included. It's a tease that left me wanting more.
I have to admit that my favorite piece is the featurette, because it perfectly incorporates the characters in the movie, the stars who appear in the film and the voices that portray the actors who play them — which makes a lot more sense once you watch it! The first half focuses on the LEGO® characters, and it's brilliantly thought out in its sense of timing: Kids start to get antsy at just about the time when the names of the voices are brought into focus.
Make no mistake — The LEGO® Movie is peppered with big Hollywood names. Emmet mentions that Chris Pratt plays him and then jokes that it must be an expensive movie, Batman wisecracks that Will Arnett is only playing him because George Clooney was busy, Wyldstyle says she's a strong role model because Elizabeth Banks is playing her and Vitruvius reads from the phone book to prove how lucky he is to have Morgan Freeman voicing his part.
Of course, I can't forget about the dastardly President Business, who plans to take over the universe and whom Emmet and all his new friends are trying to stop! President Business is pretty torn up about the fact that the producers scraped the bottom of the barrel to get Will Ferrell to play him — he thinks he deserves to be played by Robert De Niro, Al Pacino or Ryan Gosling.
Those little bits might be lost on the kids, but they only made me want to see the movie more. Any film that equally plays to both adults and children scores in my book. I giggled as Wyldstyle talked about the directors using the characters as props, just picking them up and moving them as they pleased — not cool.
The movie will win the kids over not only with its adventure story but also with the gorgeous LEGO® worlds the characters travel to, such as Pirates Cove, Knights Club, Vikings Landing and Cloud Cuckoo Land. The other characters living in those worlds are big draws as well. They include ninjas, pirates, weird unicorn/cats and dinosaurs — and they all look amazing.
Crank up those subwoofers, dude, and see how it all comes together in the official trailer. Let me know how long it takes you to annoy your friends and family by continually singing the theme song — because, you know, everything is awesome!
