Tom Clancy, who passed away in October of last year, is well known for his wonderfully detailed military science and espionage works — many of which have been made into movies. The latest Tom Clancy film, based on his popular character Jack Ryan, comes out Dec. 25 and stars Chris Pine, the popular portrayer of Captain Kirk in the recent big-screen adaptations of Star Trek. We thought this would be an excellent time to go back through Clancy's novels on a baby name hunt of our own.
Published in 1984, The Hunt for Red October was later made into a very successful feature film. This is Tom Clancy’s first novel, and the first in the Jack Ryan universe.
The events in this book predate The Hunt for Red October. In 1992, it was made into a film starring Harrison Ford and Sean Bean.
This is the sequel to The Hunt for Red October and features themes such as intelligence gathering, counterintelligence and guerilla warfare.
This is another Tom Clancy book that was later made into a film. In 1994, Harrison Ford reprised his role as Jack Ryan.
An interesting note: This book was released just days before the Moscow uprising in 1991 that began the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In 2002, Ben Affleck took the role of Jack Ryan to the big screen.
This book is the ultimate prequel — while not the first published in the series, it is the first in the plot chronology. This book has not been made into a film, but Paramount Pictures has bought the film rights and it is currently in development.
