Weird Celebrity
Baby Names

From Vince Vaughn’s son named Vernon to Busy Philipps’ daughter Cricket and Kim Kardashian's daughter North West, some celebrity baby names are bound to be awkward at school roll call. Whether they are difficult to pronounce (Xano? Eisele?) or borderline inappropriate (such as one filmmaker’s son named Shooter), the following celebrity baby names make our list as the best of the worst for 2013.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Celebrities have a long history of naming their children unique names (Apple, anyone?), however 2013 was a big year for weird celebrity baby names.

It is almost like celebrity parents are trying to outdo each with the weirdest name, almost forgetting that their child has to go to school with this name (albeit an expensive private school).

Case in point — are we the only ones that thought Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were punking us when they announced their daughter was named North West?

The following baby names may get some awkward glances at school role call or on the playground — or perhaps their unique names will just help them stand out in a crowd?

Check out our picks for boy names and girl names and weigh in on your thoughts below.

Weird celebrity baby boy names

Jim Varney as ErnestVince Vaughn caused some head scratching when he named his son Vernon Lindsay Vaughn. Although Vaughn reportedly named his son after his father, we can't help but think of Jim Varney's character, Ernest, and his catchphrase, "Know what I mean, Vern?" and his movie, Hey Vern, It's Ernest! Even if Vernon decides to go by his middle name of Lindsay, it isn't much better.

Filmmaker Julian Schnabel and May Andersen will definitely raise eyebrows at roll call with their baby name choice for their son — Shooter Sandhed Julian Schnabel. Naming your child Shooter just never seems like a good idea, although what can we expect from the man who “unveiled a 20-foot artwork of his pregnant, nude fiancée” at her baby shower.

Fergie and Josh Duhamel named their son Axl, after Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose — which is unusual, but we have to admit pretty edgy and cool. This one might grow on us.

Trying to be creative and invent your own name often doesn’t work out well, either. Case in point, model Maggie Rizer, who named her son Quinnlann. She should have just stopped at Quinn.

Twilight star Cam Gigandet also takes home the prize for the worst baby name of the year with the unusual name of Rekker Radley. Don’t be surprised if both of the names Quinnlann and Rekker are characters in a new CW teen drama —or, at the very least, new characters in a daytime soap.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar

Here are more celebrity boy names that will raise some eyebrows at roll call:

  • Dekker: Franklin & Bash star Mark-Paul Gosselaar (Another “made up” sounding name)
  • Daxel: America’s Next Top Model’s Lisa D’Amato (Paxel, anyone?)
  • Xano: Wilfred actor Jason Gann
  • Valentin Francesco: Actress Ali Landry
  • Klay: Wayne Rooney
  • Jett: Journalist Lisa Ling
  • Ellis: Travel Channel host Samantha Brown
  • Knox: Actress Amanda Righgetti (We can't help but think of Amanda Knox)
  • Thatcher Bray: Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly

Weird celebrity baby girl names 2013

The weirdest celebrity baby girl name of the year that is guaranteed to raise some eyebrows at roll call belongs to the daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West: North West.

“The way [Kim] explained it to me was that ‘North’ means ‘highest power’ and she says that North is their highest point together,” Kris Jenner said during an interview.

Holly Madison and Rainbow

There is no denying how adorable Holly Madison's baby girl is, however her unique name of Rainbow Aurora hasn’t won her any new fans, with most commenters saying something something along the lines of “Good luck as a stripper in 20 years." Ouch. Madison said the name was inspired by a classmate who had the name.

“I was always envious of her name!” she told InTouch magazine. “If getting teased about her name is the worst thing that’s going to happen to her … bring it on.”

Cougar Town star Busy Philipps already has a daughter with the head-scratching name of Birdie, so we shouldn’t have been too surprised when she gave birth a daughter this year that she named Cricket Pearl.

Philipps took to Twitter to (sort of) defend her baby name choice, writing, "It’s weird people think my kids will be in therapy because of their names. Guys, my kids will be in therapy for LOTS of reasons, I’m sure.”

We love Jimmy Fallon, however his baby name choice of Winnie Rose left some perplexed. The name is cute, however there is no way she is going to go to school without someone calling her, “Winnie- the- Pooh.” This is one name that could definitely grow on us, however, especially after hearing his story behind the name.

"It's not Winnie-the-Pooh at all, even though I do love Winnie-the-Pooh,” said Fallon, revealing that the name is from Lake Winnipesaukee, where he and his wife got engaged. He also said that Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years “is the coolest girl in any TV show ever” and he said the name had extra meaning because, “She’s a big ‘win’ for us.”

Lady Antebellum's Hillary Scott

OK, so even though the name Winnie may grow on us, we aren’t sure about these other weird celebrity baby names:

  • Eisele Kaye: Lady Antebellum Hillary Scott (pronounced nothing like it is spelled: "Eyes-lee")
  • Everest Hobson: George Lucas and Melody Hobson’s daughter
  • Rio: Actor (and Kate Hudson’s brother) Oliver Hudson
  • Doone Isla: Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard
  • Penna Mae: 90210 actor Ian Ziering’s daughter
  • Holiday Grace: Actor Harold Perrinaeau’s daughter
  • Paisley Faye: Olympian Jennie Finch
  • Maven Sonae: Actor Tracy Morgan
