From mom CEOs to authors to celebrities and more, the moms on this list are not only putting their brainpower to use, but many of them are using it to benefit other moms, women and children across the nation and the world.
When we're talking about America's smartest moms, we thought it would be best to start at the top, with our very own First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS), who is also mom to two daughters. However, it's just not the FLOTUS status that makes Michelle Obama one of the smartest moms in the nation. Mrs. Obama attended Princeton University and Harvard Law School, working for the University of Chicago Hospital before her husband became our president.
This celebrity mom has made headlines in early 2013 — even more than usual. Angelina Jolie is a mother of six kids, a movie star, a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations and, most recently, an inspiring (and perhaps somewhat surprising) advocate for women being tested for the breast cancer gene. And, there's one thing for certain, Jolie proves that brains and beauty are far from being mutually exclusive!
The newest mom on our list, journalist Lisa Ling welcomed daughter, Jett, in spring 2013. You likely know Ling from her stint on the daytime talk show, The View, however, her credits also include hard-hitting international reporting for CNN, The National Geographic Channel, The Oprah Winfrey Show and others. We're looking forward to seeing how she balances her new role as a mom with her jet-setting, boundary-pushing career!
A mom who has caused some controversy in the land of working mothers over the past couple of years, Marissa Mayer — whose career includes helping to build a little old site called Google and her current position as CEO and president of Yahoo — wrote the book when it comes to being a smart mom. Mayer was praised for paving the way for working moms, as she was quite pregnant when she became CEO, returning to work with newborn son in tow... in the nursery she had built for him at the Yahoo offices.
This smart mom has a full plate — not only is she the commissioner for the Food and Drug Administration, but she is also the mom to two teenagers. Which one do you think challenges her the most? We aren't kidding when we say that Dr. Hamburg is smart — from a degree in medicine from Harvard Medical School, to her research work in neuroscience, to countless other impressive jobs and projects — and she is only the second woman to hold this position for the U.S. government, as well as one of the youngest.
The mom who made "lean in" the newest phrase in the world of motherhood, Sheryl Sandberg holds the title of chief operating officer of Facebook. This smart mom of two released her first book, Lean In, in early 2013, which encourages moms to be smart about the way they approach their careers. We don't think any mom will refute this smart mom's strategy, as it seems to be working pretty darn well for Sandberg.
Self-made fashion designer and single mom to three boys, Tory Burch has become a household name in the past few years, thanks to her hard work, dedication to her brand and a genuine smile that can often be found on her face. Recently joining the ranks of billionaires (according to Forbes) Burch is not just a smart business woman, but she's a smart mom as well — her kids are off-limits when it comes to the media, no exceptions.
Forget about Bill, it's Melinda Gates who is topping our list! A former Microsoft employee herself, Melinda is now a mom to three children — two girls and a boy — and co-founder of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which grants money to projects worldwide to help improve the lives of people in need. They have granted over $26 billion since the foundation was created. She puts heart into being smart, with a significant amount of the foundation's grants benefiting projects that focus on women and children.
