One of the best things you can do to improve your relationship is to really listen. We all get in moods where we look like we're listening, but really we're just going through the motions. Rather than taking in what our partner says, we nod at all the right places, mumble half-hearted responses and smile politely. If this has become a habit, it's time to listen up – for real. Make (and hold) eye contact, put your phone away (hide it if you have to), ask questions and participate in the conversation. Focus on what your partner is saying. The more you listen to each other, the closer you'll become.
If date night lately means going to the same pizza place every Friday (and getting the same toppings), it's time to get a bit more creative. Pick a night, hire a babysitter if you need one and plan a more inspired date night. Maybe start at the little wine bar that just opened up, moving on to a restaurant you've always wanted to try and then a snowy walk through your favorite park. The point is to make the evening even better by doing things that are new and fresh, not part of a routine. By putting effort into a date night, you'll realize how much fun you can have together when you're not stuck in a dating rut.
Getting away together is a great way to put the spark back into your relationship. Rent a cabin for a few days, take a weekend road trip together or simply stay at a cute bed and breakfast nearby for the night to change things up. No matter where you end up, this is a good opportunity for you to be alone with your guy, listen to each other and enjoy each other's company. Sometimes you need totally neutral territory, away from your everyday routine to really rekindle your romance.
