Spending time solo

Whether you're currently attached or not, alone time can be a positive experience. If you find yourself with some solo time on your hands, here are a few ways to take advantage of having time to yourself.

1Curl up with a book

It may seem mundane, but if you're the type of person who never has time to read and you find yourself with some spare time, why not pick up a paperback? If you don't have anything waiting to be read, get recommendations from friends, hit the local library or check out the latest bestsellers to find inspiration. Better yet: Organize a book swap with your BFFs. You can unload all the paperbacks collecting dust on your shelf in favor of new reads that your friends have been raving about.

2Get cultured

Take yourself out on a date to a museum or art gallery when you find yourself with extra time. No matter where you live, there are bound to be interesting exhibits, art openings or even smaller gallery shows you can check out the next time you're looking for something to do solo. Doing this is a great way to do something different while rediscovering your city and everything it has to offer.

3Pamper yourself

From facials to body scrubs to massages, sometimes an afternoon at the spa is the perfect solo splurge. You'll feel gorgeous, refreshed and ready to tackle anything that comes your way. Plus, who doesn't love getting pampered? If you can't afford a trip to the spa, create a DIY experience at home.

Here are a few at-home spa musts:

  • Soak in a tub filled with bath salts or bubbles. Light lots of scented candles.
  • Exfoliate all over with your favorite body scrub for smooth, glowing skin.
  • Moisturize with a lightly scented body lotion when you get out of the bath, before your skin is totally dry.
  • Treat your complexion to a facial mask suited to your skin type.
  • Give yourself a mani-pedi and apply a cheerful shade of pretty polish you can't resist.

4Treat yourself

Spending time alone doesn't have to mean sweatpants and TV dinners. Why not treat yourself to a dinner out or check out a must-see movie on your own? You don't need to have a date to enjoy a delicious dinner at a restaurant you've been meaning to try. Or if dinner without a date isn't your thing, bring a book to your local coffee shop and sip a latte while you relax and read.
