Why no one is actually sitting through a 30-minute porno anymore

There was a time, not so long ago, when folks craving a quick masturbatory thrill had to jump through hoops, or at least succumb to a few embarrassing seconds at the video store, to get their hands on a porn film. Those who enjoyed porn probably breathed a collective sigh of relief when everything became digitized and they could retreat to their computer, discreetly type in a credit card number and download a movie without facing a video store clerk.

Time marches on. It no longer takes a bank account or proof of ID to access porn — you just need to know which free websites to visit. You also have to be willing to sacrifice any semblance of a porn film "plot" to get your rocks off (and I'm sure no one is weeping over that little fact). That's because porn GIFs are replacing porno movies. And, contrary to popular belief, men and women are taking advantage of this trend.

“GIFs have become more popular because they don't feel as ‘icky’ as video porn,” says Eboni Harris, a relationship therapist in Houston and host of Room for Relations: Sex and Relationship Podcast. “You don't have to go to scary sites like Pornhub or RedTube with fear that your computer might get a virus; or worse, someone sees your internet history."

GIFs can be found everywhere — from well-known sites like Twitter and Tumblr to Reddit porn subreddit sites. Harris says these are trusted sites where porn can be discussed publicly without concerns about being judged.

"There is also the simple idea that GIFs give viewers the opportunity to use their imagination," Harris says. "The consumer gets to decide what is going on in the scene, who are the players and how they got there. This alone has made GIFs more appealing to women.”

Sites like Bangbus still charge a pretty penny for access to short films. A one-month membership to the site costs $29.95, or about $20 less than many of us pay for cable, with no Claire and Francis Underwood to help justify the expense. But websites that make you pay for porn seem to be the minority these days. Pornhub and XVideos.com are both extremely popular free sites that offer both longer "movies" and GIFs completely free of charge.

When it comes to porn, the money-making model doesn't make a whole lot of sense to anyone outside of the industry. It's almost as if it all exists within the walls of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. Viewers are seeing the raunchiest of clips via sites that show porn GIFs. Some leave comments asking for the "sauce," or a link to the source that features a full-length film — most do not. At the end of the day, how much more can there possibly be to see, unless you suspect you'll be up all night wondering what witty dialogue led to "Eva Notty taking it like a champ?"

Such easy access to porn GIFS — and the attitude that they aren't as "icky" — may be liberating for adults who love porn, but it also poses an obvious problem for the millions of underage children and teens using sites like Twitter and Reddit. Pornography was once explicit visual material that belonged solely to adults and only crossed over into an adolescent's life by mistake, like that time you went searching for your dad's hidden Skittles stash and unearthed his Christy Canyon VHS tape. That line is blurred when it comes to porn GIFs because anyone, regardless of age, can access a site like Reddit's porn_gifs subreddit (which is so very NSFW). And, once you do, it's plain to see that the top-rated GIFs feature hardcore scenes and the kind of fast, violent and explosive sex that reminds you of atoms smashing into each other.

More: What everyday men and women really think of porn

Any poor young man who lacks real-life sexual experiences and is introduced to sex via GIFs like these is going to have trouble accepting that pulling porn moves during real-time sex is going to result in a lot of frustration, confusion and pain — oh my goodness, the pain. Any young woman taking her cues from porn GIFs may wonder why she isn't instantly orgasming with a mile-wide smile across her face every time her man ejaculates on her face without, at the very least, warning her (which is Sex Etiquette 101). In a world where even adults sometimes forget porn stars are acting, can we blame young people for getting the wrong message about sex?

It's also a lot easier to become desensitized to pornography when a vertical row of naked women in various states of sexual activity are staring at you from the same screen. You can enjoy a few seconds of one fantasy, then switch over to three seconds of another, and keep going and going. When you think about it, this evolution in porn was bound to happen given our increasing inability to stay still and focus on one task or web page at a time.

The bottom line is: Nobody is paying for porn anymore (and, if you are, you'd better have a really good reason for it and a Ferrari in your garage). And porn GIFs, as long as they're not being accessed by underage kids and teens (and they are) are considered a safer, less offensive way for men and women to enjoy pornography without fear or guilt.
