The most annoying things people do on a first date that ruin a chance for a second

Going on a first date with someone usually comes with a lot of trepidation. We want our date to like us, but more importantly, we don't want to dislike them.

While a first impression doesn't say everything about someone, it sure says a lot, and there are plenty of little things that can add up to a bad one. We all have certain red flags that go up when we're getting to know someone that will ultimately determine whether or not we ask for a second date. What's truly unfortunate is that most people don't even realize they're setting off these red flags until it's too late.

In order to help out single people everywhere who are just trying to navigate the treacherous world of dating, here are some of the biggest turn-offs on a first date. If you think you might be guilty of one, don't fret. There's still time to make adjustments before you get face-to-face with someone again.

1. Bad breath

This is much more common than you might otherwise think for a couple of reasons. 1) It's hard to tell someone they have bad breath, because it suggests they also have bad hygiene, and that's a sensitive area. 2) People become used to their own breath and smells, so it often goes unnoticed by the offender.

However, according to a recent poll by an oral hygiene company, smelly breath is the biggest turn-off on a first date. Fifty-two percent of daters surveyed said that the worst offenders are smokers because they have "fag breath" (fag is slang for cigarette in England). Garlic breath took second place with 27 percent of daters saying that was their deal breaker.

2. Excessive phone use

People who spend more time looking at their phone rather than you either have a social disorder, or aren't interested enough in you to give you the time of day.

3. Rudeness

Several Facebook users cited this as their number one turn-off. This includes bad tipping, offending others in the vicinity and getting unnecessarily angry/hostile towards you. Example from Heather Boaz, "I once had somebody snap at me when I suggested going Dutch — 'Don't offer unless you actually intend to split it! I'm not gonna fight you on that. I hate that fake thing girls do.'"

4. Being overly familiar

These are the people who act like you're much closer than people who've only just met. Sonya Kuropatwa elaborates: "Let's not pretend we're close pals/lovers/romantic partners until we are, mkay? There's nothing worse than a date trying to tease me about 'that thing I do' when
a) This is the first time they've witnessed 'that thing I do', or
b) THAT'S NOT EVEN A THING I DO."

5. Going too fast

This sort of goes hand-in-hand with number four, but includes people who get handsy without consent, and invite you up to their apartment way too early in the relationship. You know who you are.

6. Lateness

This was a big one for everyone we polled. I don't care if there was traffic, or you forgot to feed your cat. There's fashionably late, and then there's just having no respect for the other person's time or presence.
