Lingerie serves greater purpose than sex appeal for your partner

Julia Horniacek is an independent freelance writer reporting beauty and fashion for SheKnows and Bustle.com, addicted to exercise, coffee and making an attempt to get outside her comfort zone.

Why every woman should experiment with wearing lingerie

At the end of the day, most of us find serenity in snuggling into yoga sweats and a faded graphic tee. Finally, our bodies can relax and our mind can quiet down. We'd all prefer if our office dress code encouraged sweats and hoodies, but think about it. Lunch with your boss feels so much more appropriate in a skirt and blazer. Heading to happy hour with the girls is a lot more exciting in a mini skirt and pumps. Our day clothes give us confidence for the occasion, so why shouldn't your bedroom wear do the same?

And there is more to lingerie than its magic sexual stimulation powers. Sweats make us feel comfy, and lingerie makes us feel sexy.

Slinky black numbers, lace panties and thigh-high tights can drive your special someone crazy, but intimate undergarments should first and foremost cater to your satisfaction. Sex may be about a beautiful connection with your partner and feeling good physically, but rest assured that connection is 10 times better when your self-esteem is through the roof.

And lingerie doesn't have to be complicated. Some lingerie is a little over the top with straps and zippers, body suits and tights. If that's your thing, be my guest, but if you find those pieces intimidating rather than stimulating, there are a variety of outfits from simple two-piece combos to gowns. You are wearing the lingerie, not your partner. Comfort is key.

In an article published on Cosmopolitan online titled "I Wore Lingerie to Bed for 7 Nights Straight - and My Sex Life Went Bonkers," a woman goes into detail on her sexy adventure down lingerie lane. The first night she opted to slip into a simplistic, Champagne chemise with lace-edge detailing, and even a minor switch-up from her standard polka dot shorts and cotton tee worked wonders.

"The silk made me feel sexier than the cotton I usually wore - and much more grown-up, which is exactly how I should feel as a 28-year-old," she writes. Simply wearing the outfit even gave her the confidence to initiate a second mid-morning romp.

"While it's Ben who typically initiates sex, I took the reins this time, kissing his neck until he was awake enough to kiss me back. We had sex and then slept for a few more hours."

Obviously throwing lingerie into the mix made for one fantastic week of sex, but most importantly, our anonymous writer experienced a surge of blooming confidence.

"While I'd begun the challenge with Ben in mind, it was becoming clear that I was the one who'd reaped the greatest rewards. Just six nights of skimpier sleepwear made me feel immeasurably more comfortable in my skin and my bed. Besides, I thought, it's just as easy to slip on something sexy as it is to put on any old PJs."

Making a lingerie purchase is absolutely an investment in your sex life, but most importantly, it is an investment in your confidence because wearing sultry underwear is not restricted to the bedroom. Buying even a slightly fancier brassiere makes me feel sexier, even if I know I will be the only one to enjoy it.

So lingerie is not necessarily about sex. It is about the confidence a woman can develop by knowing how lingerie makes her feel and not just wearing it for her partner.
