Depending on the weather and time of year, there's something for every kid. Most of these activities are fun for adults too!
Showcasing more than 600 species from around the world, the Bronx Zoo is the world's largest urban zoo. Kids of all ages will go wild over the lions and bananas over the majestic gorillas. Folks of all ages can easily spend an entire day wandering the beautifully manicured grounds and visiting with the animals.
Covering 843 acres, Central Park is New York City's backyard. Kids will enjoy running through the grass or playing on any number of playgrounds, or check out some of the sites like the Central Park Zoo, Belvedere Castle and Wollman Skating Rink. There's even a public swimming pool at the north end of the park.
OK, this is really two different activities since there is a children's museum in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan. Both are worth visiting depending on where you are. The Children's Museum of Manhattan offers five floors of fun exhibits ranging from science to art. The Brooklyn Children's Museum, meanwhile, was founded in 1899 and was the first museum created for children.
Children's Museum of the Arts
Located in Manhattan, the Children's Museum of the Arts celebrates art for and by children. Their permanent collection includes more than 2,000 paintings and drawings done by children from 50 countries and dating back to the 1930s. They also offer special events and classes for kids.
Arguably the most famous toy store in the world, your kids may never forgive you if you don't stop at FAO Schwarz to admire the massive displays of toys, games and stuffed animals. If you're worried about going broke, you can take a tip from my in-laws and tell your kids it's a toy museum!
