What you will need:

  • Twine
  • Small clothespins
  • 5 x 7-inch photographs
  • Thumb tacks or sticky tabs

listStep 1: Organize the details

Decide on the scope of your project. Figure out the number of people you would like to include, the message you would like to create and how you will divide the people by letter.

For this project we were working with 22 individuals/small groups and chose the message "Happy 85th Birthday Grandma!"

Step 2: Communicate your plan

Find the easiest way to reach everyone and let them know what you would like to do. Give a firm deadline for when you would like their photograph. Continuous reminders may be necessary.

For this project we sent an email assigning each person a specific letter to take a photograph with, including instructions on cutting their letter out on a full-sized piece of white poster board and returning the photo to the coordinator of the project in a high-resolution format so that it could be printed as a 5 x 7-inch photograph.

Step 3: Prepare display

Once you have received all photos, have them printed in a 5 x 7-inch format. You can send them to most drugstore chains and get them printed within 24 hours for a reasonable price.

Find the area where you would like to create your display and begin hanging your twine, leaving slack in the twine so it dips in the middle once photos are clipped on. Secure ends of twine with either tacks or sticky tabs to avoid holes in the wall. Make sure you hang your display at a height that is eye level to party-goers so they can admire your beautiful photo arrangement.
