5 Palm Springs
boutique hotels
If you thought Palm Springs' celebrity hotspots were the city's best-kept secret, you've never been privy to its collection of boutique hotels. On a recent visit, I happily discovered a portfolio that runs the gamut of kitschy and fun to chic and elite.
Orbit In

If you're not staying at Orbit In, at least stop by for happy hour when the hotel's signature cocktail, the Orbitini, is served gratis at the poolside bar. Decked top to bottom in retro fashion, Orbit In is a fun midcentury compound with nine designer studio rooms each unique in its style. One of the suites, the Frey Lounge, honors the iconic Palm Springs architect Albert Frey and comes complete with views of Frey House II from the patio. Spend an afternoon playing shuffleboard poolside, then hop on one of the complimentary bikes for a tour of downtown.
Rooms: 10
Starting rate: $109 per night
