Back-To-School
Must-Haves

From skinny jeans to eco-friendly styles, we've got the five fashion essentials for girls this fall.

Back to school fashion for girls

1Jeans rule!

Skinny jeans are still in fashion. They should have some stretch to them for comfort. Pair them with long tees or shirts that float away from the body. Bell bottoms are also making a comeback for retro chic.

2Green is in!

Eco-consciousness has moved into the kid's clothing industry. Clothing made from highly-sustainable materials, such as organic cotton and bamboo, is in. Kids are learning all about the importance of recycling. It can apply to fashion too, and can make second-hand items a statement of choice, not necessity.

3Layered tops

This continues to be a popular look. It also works well in any climate — just switch from tanks and short-sleeved tees to long-sleeved shirts and sweaters when the temperature starts to drop. Layered tops also allow you to update a wardrobe with a few new outer layer pieces while utilizing old favorites that still fit and are in good shape. Add a top with a Peter Pan collar for another popular look when layering.

5Luxury and elegance

Thanks to the likes of Suri Cruise, many kids and their parents have developed a taste for designer duds. Depending on your budget, you may want to check out outlets and second-hand options. Remember, kids outgrow clothes fast. Don't buy high-dollar items too far in advance.

Keep these fashion tips in mind when hitting the stores this summer and fall:

  • Fashion trends may vary from region to region. What's popular in New York or L.A. may not be in Dallas.
  • Set a budget and stick to it!
  • Have a plan before you go shopping. Check out the clothes in the higher-end stores to see what's in, and then make a game of seeing how close you can come to the original in your favorite department or discount store.
  • Don't buy everything at once. Trends change quickly. If you've spent your whole budget in one trip to the mall, you'll be sorry in a month or two when the latest "must haves" hit the stores. Better to teach your daughter a lesson about planning ahead by keeping a portion of the total budget aside for periodic purchases.

Have fun with fashion and encourage your kids to find their own style. If they're comfortable and confident, they'll look great no matter what they're wearing!
