Taking a long family vacation is not always an option for families today. Between balancing busy schedules and balancing budgets, many families are opting for quick weekend getaways instead of the annual two-week summer trek.

Here are some great weekend getaways to make your family bonding time even sweeter!

Camping

Camping is a great option for families experiencing both a time and a money crunch. Campgrounds are far less expensive than renting hotel rooms, and equipment can be bought for a reasonable price. You can even share with another family! Great camping alternatives are available in every area, even within an hour of major cities, making them perfect weekend destinations. Pack up some treats, like ingredients for s'mores and breakfast rolls.

Climb every mountain

Outdoor activities keep your whole family healthy. When was the last time you climbed a mountain? It doesn't have to be Mount Everest -- or even a mountain. Spend the weekend exploring local nature preserves, state parks or hiking trails. You'll see the environment in a whole new way, and learn things about your area you never imagined. Make sure you bring some energizing snacks on this weekend getaway!

Visit a dude ranch

If your family needs to learn how to slow down and appreciate the basics, bring them to a dude ranch for the weekend. You will ride horses, work with the herds and sit by a campfire at night. Ranches make sure all activities are age-appropriate, and all levels of riding experience can have a great time!
