Your young reader probably doesn't wake up in the morning begging to practice phonics. Still, an understanding of phonics (the sounds created by different letters or letter combinations) is essential to the development of reading and spelling skills. Rhyming Concentration is a free card game available from Teacher's Take-Out. It can be downloaded and printed on card stock to make illustrated playing cards that feature rhyming words. Sort It Out is an online word-sorting game available from PBS Kids' The Electric Company. The game teaches new readers the difference between hard and soft vowel sounds.
