Your carpet is a (nearly) permanent feature in your home and one that is quite the pricey investment. Since your carpet is the heart of your home, it is utilized quite often and is very susceptible to spills and stains.
How to... clean a carpet
Here are a few tips and tricks for keeping your carpet as clean as the day you bought it.
Step 1: Move furniture
You wouldn't half clean your heart, so don't half clean your carpet! In an effort to avoid any awkward color difference in carpet, make sure to move furniture prior to cleaning. As some dust bunnies and dirt can hide under furniture, it is essential to have the entire area accessible for the best cleaning job possible.
Step 2: Vacuum
To keep a carpet in tip top shape, regular vacuuming is a must especially when attempting to deep clean your carpets. Run the vacuum over the affected area at least once to ensure that you get all of the loose dirt and particles.
Step 3: Pre-treat
All areas of the carpet are not treated equally . Therefore, pre-treat the dirtier areas or stains with your favorite pre-treatment. If you don't have any, you can make your own! Stainmaster recommends 1/4 teaspoon dish washing liquid to one cup water.

Step 4: Deep clean
The best and most efficient way to clean carpet is by using some type of steam cleaner. You can use your own by adding hot water and the machine's specific detergent. Or you can rent one at your local Goodwill or home improvement store. Follow the machine's recommended instructions for a deeper clean.
Step 5: Be cautious
To keep carpets looking fresh, change the ground rules of the carpet. Create a shoe basket for guest shoes, or purchase some chic rugs to protect your carpet from outdoor elements. Keep vacuuming and wipe floor boards often. Also change out air filters regularly to avoid unnecessary dust build-up that can leave carpets looking dirty.
