How To… Get The Perfect Braid

The temperatures are rising and that means long hair is starting to get in the way of your summer fun. Instead of opting for the traditional ponytail, follow these tips from a John Frieda stylist to create the perfect braid this summer.

Step 1: Add rough paste

Apply a rough paste evenly to your hair before you start braiding. This will create an effortless summer look and give your hair more texture. To keep your hair strong all the time, try a strengthening shampoo, like John Frieda’s Lustrous Touch Strengthening Shampoo.

Step 2: Divide hair

Now that your hair is ready to be braided, use either a comb or your fingers to divide your hair into three sections. Make sure each section is even before you begin to braid.

Step 3: Braid

Now the braiding can begin! Take one of the outer sections and cross it over the middle. Continue to alternate between the two outer sections until your hair is fully braided. If you feel like mixing it up, try something new -- like an ultra-chic fishtail braid or the popular braided halo worn by celebrities like Scarlett Johansson.

Step 4: Secure end

Now that you have the perfect summer braid, secure the end with a hair elastic so it will hold all day long. Top it off with a hairspray like John Frieda’s Sheer Blonde Crystal Clear Shape & Shimmer Hairspray for long-lasting staying power.

Extra Tip

If you have fine hair, use a dry shampoo to help enhance the volume of your hair. Dry shampoo is also a great way to make your hair look and smell clean if you don’t have time to wash it.

Braids are so pretty! What a great idea to use texturing paste to create a stronger hold in the braid. In the summer I like to wear really messy, beachy braids and rough paste will help me acheive that look even better.
