How To: Make Over Your Vanity

If your bathroom is in need of a makeover, consider giving some attention to the vanity. It's an easy way to update the overall look of a bathroom without performing a major renovation.

Bathroom VanityStep 1: Decide what you want to change

First, take stock of what you like and don't like about your bathroom vanity. Decide what you want to remain the same and what you want to change. (You like the cabinets, for example, but hate the dark wood finish?)

Step 2: Make a budget

Allocate where funds will go – and decide where you can save and where you want to splurge. Installing all new cabinetry can cost a pretty penny, whereas Keig suggests a new coat of paint is an easy as well as inexpensive way to makeover your bathroom walls or even cabinetry.

Step 3: Don't completely overhaul everything.

Jill Keig, allied ASID, interior designer with Wiseman and Gale Interiors in Scottsdale, Arizona, says that you don't have to change everything in the bathroom to get an updated look. One of her best quick-fix secrets is to update fixtures and towel racks. "If you have old brass or ceramic fixtures, or towel racks that don't match, update them and install matching towel racks," she suggests.

Step 4: Accessorize

"Target is great for new bathroom accessories such as new soap dispensers and toothbrush holders," says Keig. She also feels that investing in a new set of towels can really update the look. "We tend to stick with white or ivory towels. Colored towels can look dingy after a few washes, but bleach is a white towel's best friend -- they always look nice," she adds.

Step 5: Clear some space

Simply removing all the junk from your countertops can give your vanity a whole new look. However, be functional. The bathroom is really one place where you need the items you use at hand's reach. Keig suggests "containing the chaos" – such as hairspray, lotion, etc. -- with a large glass dish, such as a trifle dish or large salad bowl.
